A new tattoo stays out of the sun for a month. That is our rule at Ink’side: no beach, no sunbathing, no swimming. Our aftercare doesn’t include sunscreen on a healing tattoo, so for the first month the answer is shade and clothes. Sunscreen comes later, once the tattoo has healed.
Why the first month is different
A fresh tattoo is an open wound. Sun on an open wound burns and irritates it, and a burnt tattoo can heal badly. Sunscreen is made for healthy skin. The safe option is to keep the tattoo out of the sun altogether.
Our aftercare guide lists the beach, sunbathing and swimming as things to avoid for one month. The sea has its own page: how long after a tattoo can you swim.
How to get through the first month in a sunny place
You don’t have to stay in your room. A few habits are enough:
- Cover the tattoo with loose, clean clothing when you are outside. Tight straps and seams rub a healing tattoo.
- Spend the hottest part of the day somewhere shaded or indoors. In Málaga that is easy to do: there are museums, churches and plenty of shaded streets in the old town.
- Keep it clean and lightly moisturised as the aftercare guide describes. Sweat makes itching and burning worse, so take it easy on very hot afternoons.
If you plan your trip around the beach, read the timing advice before you book a tattoo. Getting tattooed near the end of your stay saves most of the holiday.
When can you use sunscreen?
Once the tattoo has healed. The surface should look and feel like the skin around it: no scabs, no peeling, no tenderness. If you are not sure, send us a photo on WhatsApp.
From then on, sunscreen is part of looking after the tattoo. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, put it on before you go out and again after swimming or sweating. If your skin is sensitive, ask the pharmacist for a fragrance-free one.
Why it matters later
Strong sun fades tattoos over the years. A healed tattoo that is covered or wearing sunscreen on holiday keeps its lines sharper for longer.
If it got burnt or sun-struck early
Don’t put antiseptic, alcohol or cologne on it: they burn the skin. Keep it out of the sun, clean and moisturised, and message us if:
- the skin around the tattoo feels hot to the touch
- the redness spreads more than 3–4 cm around the tattoo
- it heals slowly and still has no firm scab after a long time
If you have pus, strong itching or pain, see a doctor.
Questions people ask
Can I sunbathe if the tattoo is covered?
Our rule has no exception for covered tattoos: no sunbathing for one month.
Which sunscreen should I buy?
Ask at a pharmacy for a broad-spectrum one. Use it only on a tattoo that has healed.
Can I put cream on a healing tattoo before I go out?
Use the cream from your aftercare instructions, in a thin layer, and keep the tattoo covered. Our aftercare doesn’t include sunscreen on a healing tattoo.
Do tattoos fade faster in the sun?
Over the years, yes: strong sun fades ink. Sunscreen on a healed tattoo helps slow that down.
