Once a tattoo is uncovered, it needs cream. The rule is short: a thin layer, 2–3 times a day. This is what we tell people at Ink’side.
When to start
It depends on what we covered the tattoo with.
- Second skin film. Take it off at the moment we tell you, wash the tattoo with neutral soap and water, let it dry, then apply a thin layer of cream.
- Derma-X gel. Leave it alone. It comes off by itself after 6–7 days. Once it has, follow the daily care below.
The difference between the two is in second skin or Derma-X: how long to keep it on.
How much and how often
Apply cream 2–3 times a day, more if your skin is dry. Use only a thin layer: too much cream can dull the colour of the pigment.
Which cream
We sell ALOE PRO V at the studio. If you prefer to buy elsewhere, Aquaphor from a cosmetics shop works too. If you want to use another cream, ask us before you start.
What not to put on it
No antiseptic, alcohol or cologne. A fresh tattoo is an open wound, and these burn the skin and can lead to infection.
Questions people ask
Can I use the same cream as for my skin?
Use the cream from the aftercare instructions, in a thin layer. If you buy your own, ask us before you start.
Can I use Bepanthen or another brand?
Our aftercare uses ALOE PRO V, with Aquaphor as an alternative. If you prefer another cream, ask us before you start, and keep the layer thin.
What if my skin is dry?
Apply cream more often than 2–3 times a day, but keep each layer thin.
How does washing fit in with the cream?
Wash the tattoo once a day with neutral soap and water, let it dry, then apply a thin layer of cream. If you sweat a lot or your work is physical, wash it more often.
What if the tattoo looks wrong?
Redness, itching and peeling at some stages are normal. If you are worried, message us before you try anything yourself. The full routine is in tattoo aftercare: the first days, week and month.
